Animal Studies Show Significant Decreases in Food Intake and Body Weight
BOONTON, N.J. – Unigene Laboratories, Inc. (OTCBB: UGNE http://www.unigene.com) will present data this week regarding a novel peptide that has been shown to reduce food consumption in animals. The poster, entitled “Reduction in Food Consumption and Weight in Dogs by Oral Delivery of a Novel Anorexigenic Peptide,” will be presented at the Keystone Symposium Conference on “Obesity: Novel Aspects of the Regulation of Body Weight” in Alberta, Canada.
The peptide, currently designated UGL269, is an analog of a natural peptide hormone, and was designed by Unigene scientists. It was tested against two other peptides in a placebo-controlled crossover study and demonstrated significant reductions in food intake and body weight when orally administered to dogs. The ability of UGL269 to reduce food intake was superior to that of other peptides reported to decrease food intake, including an analog of peptide PYY.

CHICAGO – The weak economy hasn’t just reduced restaurant traffic; it has influenced diners’ choices in entrees. Many consumers are bypassing beef for less expensive proteins like chicken, says Darren Tristano, EVP at foodservice consultants Technomic. When ordering beef, and especially steak, explains Tristano, they expect more quality, better cuts, aging and seasonings to justify paying a higher cost. Their expectations are reflected in emerging flavor and preparation trends and in menu descriptions.
These and other findings are detailed in two new reports in Technomic’s Center of the Plate series, the Poultry Consumer Trend Report and Beef & Pork Consumer Trend Report. Based on more than 3,000 consumer interviews and analysis of about 500 restaurant brand menus, the reports examine changing consumer protein preferences, attitudes toward health and food safety issues and their effects on purchase behavior, plus emerging trends in flavor, preparation and presentation. Select findings include:

Culinary Trend Mapping Report: How Gen Y Eats
Hear that rumble? It’s the sound of a generation finding its voice. Generation Y — those born between 1980 and 2000, also known as Millennials — is the lion just now trying out its roar. With total membership as high as 78 million (our study focuses on the approximately 40 million consumers between the ages of 18 and 28), Millennials represent an irresistible customer pool — and not just because of their numbers. Weaned in a culture that’s urged them to define themselves as PC or Mac, Abercrombie and Fitch or HandM, In-N-Out or McDonald’s, Gen Y is the ultimate savvy, brand-sensitive consumer cluster.

WASHINGTON – Profile America — Tuesday, January 20th. A lot of attention is being focused on dieting this month, probably as a result of all the tempting goodies that surrounded us during the holidays. The thrust of many of these observances is to promote a healthy lifestyle. But today is a little different — it’s “Rid the World of Fad Diets and Gimmicks Day”, concentrating on the down side of the desire to lose weight — diet products that defraud, disable and even cause death. About a third of adults in the U.S. maintain a healthy weight. Another third are carrying around some extra pounds. But more ominous is the fact that almost one-third are clinically obese and at risk for diabetes and heart problems. You can find these and more facts about America from the U.S. Census Bureau online at www.census.gov.

In the first-ever study of food adverts in UK magazines, researchers found them filled with sugary, salt-filled options often contradicting the health messages the articles were trying to put across.
“Nearly every magazine contains advice on a healthier lifestyle, yet we found the food adverts were for products high in sugar and salt and low in fibre such as ready meals, sauces and confectionary,” explains Dr Jean Adams, lecturer in public health at Newcastle University, who led the study.
“Obviously, it’s up to each of us to decide what we eat but if we’re constantly bombarded with images of unhealthy food every time we pick up a magazine then we’re going to be swayed in what we choose,” she adds.
